El poder del idioma = The power of the language

=================

Today I discovered the power of the vocabulary and how it can affect and reduce the convincing power of one person. I have been having this feeling in many times, but today the roles were reversed. At the same time I'll tell you about these humanitarian help associations whose members are usually spread in the city center.

As soon as I left my bicicycle to go to a shop, a man from Iran approached to me and started telling me about the dissastrous situation in Iran and what the goverment is doing with people that do not agree with its actions. Beyond of the validity/truth of this, the result is that he wanted from me some financial assistance of at least 50€, and if I felt generous I could have given 1200€.

The question is that I wanted to elegantly avoid to give him any money. So, I asked for a webpage where I can find further information about the association, and then decide whether or not give the money (I applied this strategy a couple of times before to avoid the compromised situation). Then I asked him for a brochure or a personal card of him, just to have some information and then make the decision. By that time, the man started to swear and asked me if I speak French. He asked me again if I wanted to give money at that very moment (with a very poor English speech (as bad as mine)), to what I replied again that I needed to get more information, because it's my money, etc. As it was starting raining, we try to find refuge while he tried once more to show the folder with the pictures of tortures and etc, to what I replied again for a card of him.

By that moment some 'colleagues' of him started to call him, as telling leave him, it doesn't matter. Finally, he gave me what I asked without persuade again my request. After showing my happiness for the deal and explain him that I will search for the organization and etc, he asked me where I am working, to what I replied with the truth. With my response, his face became normal again.

Evidently, their objectives or the organization itself are not so legal as he claimed. After passing this moment, I discovered I had seen myself when I'm trying to explain or convince somebody for something that I cannot easily explain with 'natural' words.

By the way, the organization does have a webpage, and it is http://www.sfvi.nl/ Doesn't help much, because is in Dutch...
