Dar clases, deadlines(1) y reuniones de progreso = Teaching, deadlines and progress meeting

Las semanas pasada y esta han sido demasiado estresantes, con tres nuevas experiencias en mi trabajo.

Primero que todo, empecé a dar clases. Honestamente no es difícil. La forma de hacerlo es bastante tranquila: sólo hay que ir al aula donde los estudiantes empiezan a hacer sus ejercicios, y si por las dudas no entienden algo, voy y les explico individualmente a menos que haya una duda generalizada. En mi caso fue aún más relajado: sólo un estudiante. Además tuve una situación graciosa sino rara para nosotros: Llegué al aula, el estudiante estaba allí. Me preguntó si iba a necesitar el libro, a lo que le dije que no sabía. Me dijo, 'OK, el profesor (que da los teóricos) me dijo que sí, así que si no tenés problema puedo ir y comprar el libro. Mientras tanto echarle un ojo a mi laptop'. Fue y se compró su libro y comenzó a hacer sus ejercicios. Saquen sus conclusiones ustedes mismos...

La segunda fue un deadline(1) a una presentación de un artículo. Con mi actual y ex-supervisores trabajamos para enviar un artículo a una conferencia importante (PKC 2007). Trabajamos casi 24 horas: nosotros lo hacíamos de 9 a 20 y mi ex-supervisor que está en Los Ángeles (con 9 horas menos que nosotros) tomaba la posta y continuaba hasta nuestras 9am. Por supuesto que mientras tanto tuvimos algunas negociaciones y debates para terminar con un artículo en buena forma. Además, tuvimos algunos problemas con el servidor de envío que se cayó 10 minutos antes del deadline, pero por suerte le encontramos la vuelta y lo enviamos 6 minutos luego del deadline.

La tercera y última hoy fuimos a una reunión de progreso de mi proyecto. En líneas generales, es una reunión con los representantes de las empresas que ponen la plata y los que la gastamos. Tenemos que justificar que hemos progresado como se esperaba y explicar un poco los planes futuros. En esta reunión hice una presentación mostrando mi progreso. Por suerte lo hemos hecho bien, los resultados son buenos and hay buenas perspectivas. Pero los momentos previos fueron atemorizantes...

Para finalizar, sin estar en mis planes a mediano plazo, este sábado estoy partiendo a Bertinolo en Italia. Voy a una escuela de otoño en Zero-Knowledge(2) toda la semana, a estudiar, conocer gente nueva y ya conocidos y por supuesto un nuevo país. Sin embargo el pronóstico dice que será intenso mi ritmo luego de la escuela: Amberes en Bélgica donde seguramente tendré que dar una charla sobre nuestro artículo que fue enviado y aceptado.

(1) Fecha y hora límite para presentar algo, no se me ocurre una expresión más corta, entonces, uso la versión inglesa de la palabra.

(2) Concepto criptográfico donde se demuestran preposiciones sin mostrar la información privada. Ejemplo: yo te demuestro que conozco el logaritmo discreto de un número público sin revelarlo. Por supuesto para vos es díficil calcularlo.

Last and this weeks I have been really busy with three new experiences at work.

First of all, I started teaching. Honestly it is not that hard. The way to do instructions here is quite relaxed: you just go to a classroom where student start doing their exercises, and just in case they don't understand something, I go and explain particularly to them, unless the question is too generalized. In my case was even more relaxed: just one student. Moreover it was funny if not strange the situation: I arrived to the classroom, the student already there. He asked me whether he need the book, I told him that I don't know. He said, 'OK, the professor (who gives the lectures) told me I will, so don't you mind I can go and buy the book. Meanwhile, could you take a look to my laptop'. He effectively went to buy the book, and afterwards started to do the exercises. Make the conclusions yourself...

The second was a deadline to a submission. With my current and ex-supervisors we worked to send a paper to an important conference (PKC 2007). We worked almost 24 hours: we did from 9 to 20 and as my ex-supervisor is in LAX (9 hours less than our) he took the token and continued until our 9am. Of course, in the meantime we had 'negotiations' and discussion to end up with a paper in good shape. Additionally, there were some problems with the submission server just 10 minutes before deadline, but affortunely we got rid of them and sent it 6 minutes after deadline...

The third and last (but not least) today we went to a progress meeting of my project. Roughly speaking, it is a meeting with the representatives of the companies that put the money, and us, who expend it. We have to justify that we have progressed as expected and explain a bit about future plans. In this meeting I did a presentation showing my progress. Greatfully, we have made it good, the results are nice and there are good perspectives. But the previous moments were kind of scaring...

To finish, without being in my mid term plans, this Saturday I'm leaving to Bertinolo, in Italy. I'll follow an Autumn School in Zero-Knowledge for one entire week, to study, meet new and already known people and of course know a new country. However, the forecast is intense after school: Antwerpen in Belgium where surely I'll give the talk of our paper that was previously submitted and accepted.

Este hilo debería publicarse en el blues de fish, pero tiene su toque de humor. Como ya saben, mi edificio está siendo reconstruído y pusieron un recubierto en la parte exterior. Por lo tanto mi acceso a internet gratis desaparició. Sin embargo esto es lo que tengo que hacer para tener señal...

Afortunadamente puedo tener acceso para emergencias... Repito que no contrato un proveedor de internet porque al final de este año, la conexión a internet estará disponible en el edificio a un precio mucho menor que el de un proveedor convencional. La principal desventaja de contratar un proveedor es que que tengo que suscribirme por 2 años para tener mejores precios, y el término mínimo de contrato es por 6 meses...

Por eso, sobreviviré con este no tan cómoda configuración de mi escritorio hogareño...

This thread should be published in the blues by fish, but it has a bit of fun. As my building is being rebuilt, they put some metallic covering the outside and so, my free-internet is almost vanished. However, this is what I have to do to get some signal...

Hopefully I can have internet just for emergency things or so. I repeat I don't have to subsribe to a provider because in the end of this year, the internet connection will be available in my building, at a much cheaper price than a conventional provider. The main drawback of hiring a provider is that I have to be subscribed for 2 years to get better prices, and also the minimal time of contract is for 6 months...

So, I'll survive with this not too comfortable layout of my home-desktop...

Diferencias idiomáticas

Hay veces en la que escuchamos o leemos textualmente las palabras de un idioma a todo y el significado no es nada inocente. Al respecto de publicidad, hace un tiempo el ahora William publicó en su blog un artículo interesante respecto a las marcas de autos. El título es Genios del markéting.

Bueno, a mí me pasó varias veces también. Por ejemplo la palabra en holandés success significa lo mismo que en inglés, y te la dicen como para desearte éxitos, especialmente cuando te despedís. El tema es que al principio trataba de decir eso, pero pronunciandola en inglés, con la 'u' con cierto sonido a 'a'. El tema es que sumando a eso mi mal pronunciación, sonaba como 'sekt' y algo más, que significa sexo. En holandés casi todo se lee como se escribe así que leerlo textualmente es lo correcto. También me pasó con 'huur', que significa alquiler. Si huur se pronuncia con la 'u' en castellano significa prostituta pero en sentido despectivo. La 'u' en holandés es bien pronunciada pero con la boca cerrada...

En estos días... = On these days...

Hola a todos, aquí estoy haciendo una actualización sobre lo que está pasando. Esta semana que pasó estuve un poco más ocupado de lo normal porque con Mehmet preparamos un borrador sobre remates electrónicos que expusimos en Bochum, Alemania. Sí, estuve en Alemania por primera vez. Y la primera impresión es que el país es diferente a Holanda: más sucio, y la gente aparenta ser más seria. No fuí muy lejos, Bochum es una ciudad a 2 horas en tren de Eindhoven, pero se nota la diferencia...

El sábado fui al cine con Andrey. Vimos World Trade Center. En mi opinión es una película horrible. Es monótona, todo el argumento es sobre un grupo de policias enterrados bajo las dos torres... Aconsejaría que no la vean. Luego nos fuimos a jugar snooker. Para que tengan una idea, perdí los cuatro juegos... Debería practicar un poco más...

Hoy, domingo, hay una maratón. Eric, el novio de Cecilia corre. En un ratito me estoy yendo al centro de la ciudad a estar con ellos y hacerle hinchada a Eric. Por el maratón, una orquesta me despertó: una de las paradas de la carrera es justo abajo de mi edificio...

Hello all, I'm here again with an update on what's going on. This last week I was a bit more busy than usual, because with Mehmet we prepared a draft about electronic auctions which we exposed in a meeting in Bochum, Germany. Yeah, I was in Germany for the first time. The first impression is that the country is different to The Netherlands, more dirty, and people look more serious. I didn't go too far, Bochum is a city 2-hour in train far from Eindhoven, but the difference is noticeable...

On Saturday I went to movies with Andrey. We watched World Trace Center. In my opinion is an awful film. It is monotone, all the plot is about a group of policemen trapped under the scrows for the two twin towers... I'd advice to watch it. Afterwards we played snooker. To have an intuition, I lost the four games... I should practice more...

Today, Sunday, there is a marathon. Eric, the boyfriend of Cecilia is running. In a while I'll go to the city center to meet them and support Eric. For this, today an orchestra woke me up: one of the stands of the race is just downstairs in my building...

El horario de verano = Daylight saving time

Viviendo aquí percibí la real utilidad del uso del horario de verano. Como lo mencioné muchas veces, en el verano está de día desde las 3:30 hasta las 23:30. Si no se moviera el horario, el intervalo sería de 2:30 a 22:30 que suena un poco loco. Ahora, en el invierno las cosas cambian al extremo: el día empieza a las 8:20 hasta las 16:40... no hay manera de hacer nada...

Desde un punto de vista económico, durante se usa el horario de verano, tenemos una hora más de luz efectiva lo que ahorra energía y dinero. Otros dicen que hay otras razones. Por ejemplo, se dice que les conviene a los restaurantes porque sus clientes pueden disfrutar de una hora más en las terrazas y por lo tanto gastar más plata...

Más allá de las razones reales, es claro que se tiene una hora más de día. Tener en cuenta que los negocios lo mismo cierran a las 6 de la tarde.

Comparémoslo con el caso de Salta. En el verano la luz del día empieza a las 5:40 y termina a las 20:40, mientras que en el invierno el intervalo se reduce de 7:30 hasta 18:40, y no usamos horario de verano. ¿Por qué? Esta es una de las cosas inexplicables de nuestro país. Hagamos un análisis sencillo. Supongamos que en Salta movemos el huso horario una hora adelante en verano, esto nos lleva a un intervalo de luz de día de 6:40 a 21:40.

Ahora, esto realmente ahorraría energía, ganamos una hora más en el día, porque los comercios y otras instituciones empiezas a trabajar a las 7:00 (como temprano) o 8:30-9:00 para negocios. La cuestión es que tenemos la costumbre de cerrar luego de las 20:30 lo que claramente implicaría un ahorro de energía. Salta está en el norte del país, y cuanto más al sur estemos, más horas de día tenemos (en verano) y por lo tanto este razonamiento es aún más válido.

Pero, ¿qué pasó un año atrás cuando desesperádamente tratamos de usar un horario de ahorro de energía? Simple, lo hicimos al revés: en invierno tratamos de volver una hora. Así que en Salta hubiera implicado tener luz del día desde las 6:30 hasta las 17:40. Por supuesto que esto no implica ningún ahorro de energía en absoluto. La cuestión se hace peor aún cuando nos movemos al sur de Argentina. Esta historia terminó cuando como no se ahorraba energía, pusimos las cosas como antes estaban.

¡¡Alguien me puede decir cuándo empezaremos a despertarnos y ahorrar energía ahora que tanto la necesitamos!!



Living here I perceived the actual utility of daylight saving time. I mentioned this a couple of times, but in the very summer it is clear light since 3:30 until 23:30. If they don't set the clock one hour ahead, this interval will be 2:30 until 22:30 which sounds mad. Now, in the very winter the things change extremely: daylight starts at 8:20 and finishes at 16:40... no way.

From an economical point of view, during daylight saving time is used, we have one more hour of effective daylight, which is some sense saves money. Others say that there are some other reasons. For example they say that it is better for restaurants because costumers can enjoy one more hour in the terraces and therefore spend more money...

Beyond the actual reasons, it is clear that one more hour of the day is used. Take into account that shopping places close at 6pm anyway the hole year.

Let's compare it to the case of Salta. In the very summer daylight starts at 5:40 and finishes at 20:40 meanwhile in winter the interval is reduced to from 7:30 until 18:40, and we don't use daylight saving time. Why? This is one of the unexplainable things in our country. Let's make the analysis. Suppose that in Salta we set the clock one hour ahead, this leads to dayligth interval 6:40-21:40.

Now, it will really save energy, we will gain one more hour in the day, since shop, groceries and any other institution start working at 7:00 (as earliest) or 8:30-9:00 for groceries and shops. The thing is that we have the custome of close after 20:30 which would clearly imply energy saving. Salta is in the north of the country, the more in the south we are the more daylight hours (in summer) we have, and therefore this reasoning is even more valid.

But, what happened one year ago when we desesperately tried to start using daylight saving time? Simple, we did everything in the other way around: in winter we tried to set the clock back. So in Salta would have implied to have daylight since 6:30 until 17:40! Of course this doesn't mean energy saving at all. The thing is even worse if we move to the south of Argentina. The story finished when as we didn't save energy, we remove the use of dayligth saving scheme.

Someone can tell me when we will start to wake up and save energy now that we need it the most!!!
