A week in a few lines... = Una semana en pocas líneas...

This week there are too many news. The most important one is that I obtained my visa for going to Russia, specifically to Eurocrypt '06, the most important conference in cryptography in Europe. This year is in Saint Petersburg. You must be asking yourselves what I could do there, that's the same question I'm doing myself. I'm conscious I'm not very good in cryptography (yet), but it's the custom in my group to send the starter PhD students to one important conference as this. You cannot imagine how nervous and anxious I am. I'm going to be with important and monster people in my area. One detail (and important of course) is that I'll meet my advisor for my master's degree final work, Dr. Juan Garay, that I've never met him yet.

This week I went to Delft (a city between The Hague and Rotterdam) to a conference (organized by EIDMA/DIAMANT). It was a good time to exchange ongoing work and meet colleagues from other universities and research centers.

Respect to the weather, this week the summery vanished. It was (and still is) rainy, windy and nasty. A little bit cold, but not too cold (about 10-13ºC)

My mood: really changeable. From good and optimistic moments (f.e. when I got my Russian visa) to depressing moments (when I have to speak something in a correct way), so I think you'll see soon some post of mine on the fish blues.

Today (Sunday), I went to a Spanish spoken mass, and then to Gustavo's house in Geldrop to have some empanadas with other Argentinean people: a great time!

The phrase of the week: "I'm lucky in all the senses, except in one" I'll let you guess to what I'm talking about.

Esta semana hay muchas noticias. La más importantes es que obtuve mi visa para ir a Rusia, específicamente a Eurocrypt '06, la conferencia más importantes de criptografía en Europa. Este año es en San Petersburgo. Se deben estar preguntando a sí mismos que podría hacer allá, es lo mismo que me pregunto yo. Soy conciente que no soy muy bueno en criptografía (por ahora), pero es la costumbre en mi grupo enviar los estudiantes de doctorado principiantes a una conferencia importante como esta. No se pueden imaginar lo nervioso y ansioso que estoy. Voy a estar con las personas importantes y monstruosas de mi área. Un detalle (e importante por cierto) es que voy a conocer a mi director de tesis de licenciatura, Dr. Juan Garay, que nunca lo ví cara a cara.

Esta semana fui a Delft (una ciudad entre La Haya y Rótterdam) a una conferencia (organizada por EIDMA/DIAMANT). Fue un momento bueno para intercambiar trabajos en progreso y encontrarse con colegas de otras universidades y centros de investigación.

Respecto al clima, esta semana el veranito se desvaneció. Estuvo (y aún está) lluvioso, ventoso y horrible. Un poco fresco, pero no tan frío (alrededor de 10-13ºC)

Mi humor: cambiable. De momentos muy buenos y optimistas momentos (cuando obtuve mi visa rusa por ejemplo) a momentos depresivos (cuando tengo que hablar algo de una forma correcta), así que pienso que verán comentarios pronto en el blues de fish.

Hoy (domingo) fui a una misa en español, y luego a casa de Gustavo en Geldrop a comer unas empanadas con otros argentinos: ¡bárbaro!

La frase de la semana: "Soy muy suertudo en todos los sentidos, excepto en uno" Les dejo la inquietud para piensen en a qué me refiero.

Keukenhof

This weekend Cristina and I went to Keukenhof, a famous flower exhibition in Lisse, a town between The Hague and Amsterdam. You could find photos of this visit in my photo album. More information at http://www.keukenhof.nl

A few comments: I took the train to Breda (where Cristina lives) with my bicycle without knowing that the bike requires a special ticket. I was lucky when the inspector noticed me this, because he should have charged me with a fine (about 40€) but he didn't.

We went to Lisse by car (Cristina has one), I played the role of co-pilot: Together with a map, giving instructions I am fairly good because we went and returned with just a mistake with a cost of only 3 kilometers (it was a distraction of both).

In summary, we spent a very nice moment. It's a place for not being forgotten...

Unos comentarios: Tomé el tren a Breda (donde Cristina vive) con mi bicicleta sin saber que se requiere un ticket especial. Fui suertudo cuando el inspector me lo hizo notar porque el debería haberme multado (cerca de 40€) pero no lo hizo.

Fuimos a Lisse en auto (el de Cristina), yo fui el copiloto: junto a un mapa, dando instrucciones soy bastante bueno porque fuimos y volvimos con un solo error que costó 3 kilómetros (fue una distracción de ambos).

En resumen, pasamos un buen momento. Es un lugar para no perderse...

Moti Yung's Minicourse = Minicurso de Moti Yung

This entire week I was attending to a minicourse by Moti Yung, a recognized cryptographer. Around 20 more people have attended as well: from Netherlands (Nijmegen, Amsterdam and Delft), Belgium, Germany and from here. I knew a guy from Córdoba in Argentina who studied Computer Science at FAMAF, and he is doing his PhD at Nijmegen University. Also one woman from Galicia who is doing a Postdoc at Leuven University in Belgium, and another guy from Venezuela, working at Philips Labs. These are Latin people, but also I met many other people.

The topic of the minicourse was to do a survey over the research interest of Moti, including Kleptography (the tricky part of the cryptography), Distributed cryptosystems, Self-protecting cryptosystems and some issues about cryptography and privacy-preserving techniques. All of them were really interesting, and for me were really useful to continue constructing my base of knowledge in the field.

It was an intensive week, and also good to meet people and know about their interests and exchange experiences and so forth. One funny anecdote I'll want to tell you: At the end of the minicourse, one of the attendees offered to bring some 'cryptomusic' (you could find more at http://mcplusplus.com/). He had this MP3 file in an USB stick-memory and he plugged it in on the computer of Moti Yung and then (after the driver installing process) he selected play all files from the drive. The default player launched and started played some erotic-porno-like sounds (it seemed to be a porno video, but any image could not be watched). He suddenly stopped it, and after the embarrassing moment for both our professor and the speaker, he played the actual file and enjoyed then... was a kind of funny moment. We agreed that the 'problem' became from the media player which tried to sell this video...

Summing up, it was really positive to everybody, with interesting discussions and social relations.

Esta semana completa estuve atendiendo a un minicurso dictado por Moti Yung, un reconocido criptógrafo. Alrededor de 20 personas más han atentido: de Holanda (Nijmegen, Ámsterdam y Delft), Bélgica, Alemania y de por aquí. Conocí un estudiante de Córdoba que hizo Ciencias de la Computación en el FAMAF, y hace su doctorado en la Universidad de Nijmegen. También una chica de Galicia que hace un postdoc en la Universidad de Leuven en Bélgica, y otro muchacho de Venezuela, que trabaja en los Laboratorios de Philips. Estos son los latinos, pero también conocí mucha más gente.

El objetivo del minicurso fue dar un pantallazo sobre los tópicos de investigación de Moti, que incluyen Kleptografía (la parte tramposa de la criptografía), criptosistemas distribuidos, criptosistemas autoprotegidos y algunos otros aspectos sobre criptografía y las técnicas de preservación de la privacidad. Todos fueron muy interesantes, y para mí muy útiles para continuar construyendo mi base de conocimiento en el área.

Fue una semana intensa, y muy buena para conocer gente y saber sus intereses e intercambiar experiencias, y todo eso. Una anécdota graciosa que quiero contarles: Al final del minicurso, uno de los asistentes ofreció traer 'criptomúsica' (podrán encontrar más en http://mcplusplus.com/). Él tenía este archivo MP3 en un pendrive y lo conectó a la PC de Moti, y luego (luego del proceso de instalación del controlador) el puso reproducir todos los archivos de la unidad. El reproductor predeterminado se inició y con él algunos sonidos eróticos (parecía ser un vídeo porno, pero no se vio ninguna imagen). Él lo detuvo rápidamente y luego del momento avergonzante para ambos, él puso el verdadero archivo y lo disfrutamos... una especie de momento gracioso. Luego convenimos que el 'problema' fue causado cuando reproductor intentó vender este vídeo desde la Internet...

Sumando todo, fue muy positivo para todos, con debates y relaciones sociales interesantes...

UEFA cup final

Tonight here in Eindhoven, the UEFA cup final match is going to be played. The two teams involved are the Sevilla (from Spain) and the Middlesbrough (from England). With one of my colleagues and other people (who are attending to a minicourse by Moti Yung«Details coming soon» given at TU/e) will have lunch after that go to a bar to watch the match, or perhaps in the market square there will be any huge screen to watch it (along the party that people use to make up here).

The datum of this event: about 20000 people from Spanish are expected to arrive to the city for this match...

Con uno de mi colegas y otras personas (que están asistiendo a un minicurso dictado por Moti Yung «Próximamente detalles» dado en la TU/e) cenaremos algo y después iremos a un bar a ver el partido, o tal vez en la plaza del mercado habrá alguna pantalla gigante (con la fiesta que la gente suele armar aquí).

El dato del evento: cerca de 20000 personas de España se esperan que arriben a la ciudad por este partido...

It could have been worse = Podría haber sido peor...

I'm going to make a digest of what were going on these days. This will be a kind of complaint book or something like that... but as the title announces, it could have been worse...

The first complaint is about my health insurance company. They charged me five months of insurance at once. This is, 500€ at once! So, any savings I could have done were to the insurance company's pocket. In spite of this, they charged me since January 1st!!! But I've been here since Jan 14th. Anyway, I applied to the insurance January 23th and following their policy, since this date they should have started to charge me... That's means a week doing formal letters to complaint about it.

I had two incidents with my new bike. On Saturday, when I was coming back home after complaining about the bicycle insurance (because they charged 38€ more than they were supposed to), the rear tire punctured. The positive point was that I learnt how to repair and patch a puncture, and the negative is that I walked for almost 2 hours. On Sunday, when I was riding nearby Gustavo's house, and taking a turn, I fell down after braking suddenly, avoiding to crash to a child in his tricycle. By miracle I didn't kill anybody. He and his grandma were in the correct lane (so they were guilty). One of the pedals was scratched, and nothing else for the bike, and I entirely fine (just was a fright).

On Tuesday, Jorge (a guy from Mexico) and I went to the cinema to watch "Ice age II". It was a nice movie, with the only detail that I just understood a 20% of the dialogues. Really frustrating for me... all a new custom for me... That day I started to go to the swimming pool at the studentensportcentrum in the university. Before I had bought a swimming suit, the smallest size, but it's still large for me. Awful! But I'll continue wearing it, I don't matter... That day, I also tried to expose what I've been working on to my advisers in the whiteboard... I would have preferred to say nothing...

I hope you have a better and nicer time! At the end, it could have been worse!!

Les voy a hacer un resumen de lo que fue pasando en estos días. Este post va a ser una especie de libro de quejas o algo así... pero como el título anuncia, podría haber sido peor...

La primera queja es acerca de mi aseguradora de salud. Me cobraron cinco meses de seguro de una. Esto es, 500€ de una. Así que, cualquier ahorro que pude haber hecho, fueron a los bolsillos de la aseguradora. Más allá de esto, ellos me cobraron desde el 1 de enero. Pero estuve aquí desde el 14 de enero. De todos modos, solicité el seguro el 23 de enero y siguiendo su política, desde esa fecha ellos deberían haber empezado a cobrarme... esto significa una semana para hacer cartas formales de reclamos...

Tuve dos incidentes con mi nueva bici. El sábado, cuando estaba de regreso a casa luego de quejarme por el seguro de la bicicleta (porque me cobraron 38€ de más de lo que me deberían haber cobrado) se me pinchó la rueda trasera. El punto positivo es que aprendí cómo reparar y parchar una pinchadura, y el punto negativo es que me tuve que caminar casi 2 horas. El domingo, cuando estaba bicicleteando cerca de casa de Gustavo, y tomando una curva me caí de la bici luego de frenar de golpe, y evitando un choque con un chico y su triciclo. De milagro no maté a nadie. Él y su abuela estaban en el carril incorrecto (por lo que son culpables). Uno de los pedales se rayó y nada más por la bici, y yo entero y bien (fue sólo un susto).

El martes, Jorge (un mexicano) y yo fuimos al cine a ver "La era del hielo II" Fue una película muy buena, con el único detalle que sólo entendí el 20% de los diálogos. Realmente frustrante para mí... una nueva costumbre para mí... Ese día empecé a ir a la pileta del studentensportcentrum en la universidad. Antes de eso, me compré una malla, del tamaño más chico, pero que seguía siendo grande para mí. Horrible, pero la voy a seguir usando, no me importa... Ese mismo día, también intenté de explicar a mis directores en lo que estuve trabajando en el pizarrón... hubiera preferido no decir nada...

Espero que tengan una mejor semana. Pero al final, podría haber sido peor...

's Gravenhage = Den Haag = The Hague = La Haya

I went to Amsterdam to pick up my Spanish passport and then to The Hague to do some procedures there. I also went to the Argentinean consulate to see what I should do as an Argentinean citizen I am. As I woke up at 5.30, finished with this stuff at 2pm, and the beach was relatively close I went there to have lunch (some sandwiches I prepared at home).

The weather was beautiful: pleasant 23ºC and clear sky, and a gorgeous sunshine. After lunch, I decided to have a rest over the sand and I slept there for 20 minutes (therefore half of my face got tanned), until one of my colleagues called me to see whether I was going to play football as we had planned. I realized I forgot it at all, and so, I took this day off because I was really tired after traveling to The Hague, via Amsterdam (almost 3 hours by train in total) and have walked much.

After this comfortable rest, I walked trough the beach until a VVV office (tourist information) and bought a map (because I had walked blindly and by intuition, thing that in general doesn't work on European cities). Then I went to the city center (Centrum) by tram and walked around the beautiful buildings that this city has for showing. You could find some photos I took in my photoblog by clicking "Mis fotos" at the right hand side of this blog.

Some data: The Hague is called in Dutch "Den Haag" but its official name is "'s Gravenhage". I noticed that people is not as well prepared to receive tourists (they have too many difficulties to speak English) and the street indications or signals are not as good as in Amsterdam. This is my impression in a short visit of about 4 hours to the city. It's more spacious than Amsterdam, and it has a lot of urban forests (and so, don't try to sell Palermo in Buenos Aires to someone who has visited The Hague). The tram rails are often along a green grass and under trees, truly cute.

A good day off and of course this large weekend (May 5 is holiday because of the Liberation Day) I should do some delayed work. Another city in the bag...

Fui a Ámsterdam a retirar mi pasaporte español y luego a La Haya a hacer algunos trámites allí. También fui al consulado argentino a ver qué puedo hacer como ciudadano argentino que soy. Como me levanté a las 5:30, terminé todo esto a las 2pm, y la playa estaba relativamente cerca, me fui allí a almorzar (algunos sándwiches que preparé en casa).

El clima estaba divino: unos agradables 23ºC, cielo despejado y un sol de aquellos. Luego del almuerzo, decidí tomarme un descanso sobre la arena y me dormí por 20 minutos (por eso la mitad de mi cara se bronceó), hasta que uno de mi colegas me llamó para ver si iba a ir a jugar fútbol como habíamos planeado. Me dí cuenta que me olvidé por completo, y por lo tanto, me tomé el día porque estaba realmente cansado luego de viajar a La Haya, vía Ámsterdam (casi 3 horas de tren) y haber caminado medio mucho.

Luego de este descanso confortable, caminé a través de la playa hasta una oficina del VVV (de información turística) y compré un mapa (porque había caminado ciegamente y por intuición, cosa que en general no funciona en las ciudades europeas). Luego me fui al centro de la ciudad en tranvía y caminé en los alrededores de los edificios fantásticos que tiene la ciudad para mostrar. Podrás encontrar algunas fotos que tomé en mi fotoblog haciendo clic en "Mis fotos" en la parte derecha de este blog.

Algunos datos: La Haya se llama en holandés "Den Haag" aunque su nombre oficial es "'s Gravenhage". Me dio la impresión que la gente no está tan bien preparada para recibir a los turistas (tienen muchas dificultades para hablar inglés) y las indicaciones y señalizaciones de las calles no son tan buenas como en Ámsterdam. Esta es mi impresión de una corta visita de cerca de 4 horas a la ciudad. Es más espaciosa que Ámsterdam y tiene un montón de bosques urbanos (y por eso, no tratés de venderle Palermo en Buenos Aires a alguien que ha visitado La Haya). Las vías del tranvía están en medio de un césped verde y dejado de árboles, realmente lindo.

Un lindo día sin trabajo, y por supuesto en este fin de semana largo (el 5 de mayo porque se celebra el día de la liberación o independencia) debería hacer algún trabajo retrasado. Otra ciudad en la bolsa...

Historia de un argentino en el extranjero

Hola a todos, en estos días recibí (de Myriam de Tilburg) un link de una nota a un argentino que se vino a vivir por estos lados.

A mí me gustó y quiero compartirlas con ustedes. En muchas partes me sentí identificado, sobre todo esa que dice “…Y cada vez que me pongo mal, triste o a pensar me digo: ésta es mi elección.” Créanme, a veces uno llega a ver todo desde tantos puntos de vista que ni se imaginan.

Koninginnedag

This Saturday, Cristina (Colombia), Mónica (Ecuador) and I went to Amsterdam to "celebrate" the Queen's day. The thing is this: almost everybody from all The Netherlands (included us) goes there, where there are lots of public presentations, celebrations, demonstrations, wearing something orange and gets drunk, dances and does whatever they want. For me it is a kind of big commerce because everything is really expensive (a hamburger for 5€, a small cup of Coca Cola 2€, a hotdog is 3€...) and you have to play your role of consumer (imagine you with the breakfast all day...)

We arrive there at 1pm, walked through Amsterdam and reached to the Leidsplein. After a time sit in the border of a canal, we went to museumplein, where the main party took place (the one organized by the radio of the advertising in the image of this thread). There was a lot of music presentations, and also DJ Tiësto, a famous dance music DJ, which is Dutch. The city was a really untidy, dirty, every place was full of garbage... but it's the koninginnedag, and this is a tradition.

We enjoyed a lot, it was a new experience and of course spent a great time between latinos we met in all this crowd. At the end, we returned to the station to take our respective trains. Imagine the panorama: during all day trains from all around The Netherlands arrived full of people, and in the evening all this people coming back to their places in one or two normal train combinations (like a usual Saturday). Luckily I didn't have any problems, but Cristina and Mónica did, who arrived their homes around 2am...

A nice experience, now we can say, we were in the Queen's day celebration!

Este sábado, Cristina (Colombia), Mónica (Ecuador) y yo fuimos a Ámsterdam a "celebrar" el día de la reina. La cosa es: casi todo el mundo de toda Holanda (incluidos nosotros) va allí, donde hay montones de presentaciones públicas, festejos, demostraciones, llevando puesto algo naranja y se pone borracho, baila y hace lo que se les canta. Para mí es una especie de negocio grande porque todo es realmente caro (una hamburguesa a 5€, un vaso chico de Coca Cola a 2€, un pancho a 3€...) y tenés que jugar el rol de consumidor (imaginate si estás con el desayuno todo el día...)

Llegamos a las 1pm, caminamos a través de Ámsterdam y llegamos el Leidsplein. Luego de un tiempo sentados en el borde de un canal, fuimos al museumplein, donde tuvo lugar la fiesta principal (la organizada por la radio de la propaganda en la imagen de este hilo). Hubo muchas presentaciones musicales, y también DJ Tiësto, un DJ de música dance que es holandés. La ciudad era un verdadero desorden, sucia, cada lugar estaba lleno de basura... pero es el koninginnedag, es una tradición.

La pasamos bien, fue una nueva experiencia y por supuesto pasamos un lindo momento entre latinos que encontramos en medio de esta multitud de gente. Al final, nos volvimos a la estación a tomar nuestros respectivos trenes. Imaginen el panorama: durante todo el día los trenes de toda Holanda llegaron llenos de gente, y en la noche toda esta gente volviendo a sus lugares en uno o dos combinaciones de tren (como un sábado normal). Por suerte no tuve ningún problema, pero sí Cristina y Mónica, y llegaron a sus casas a eso de las 2am...

Una linda experiencia, ahora podemos decir, estuvimos en la celebración del día de Reina en Ámsterdam...

Ayer vi a Blof, y son buenos... son holandeses, pero con una diversidad de ritmos impresionantes, hasta tocaron algún tango con ritmo de pop... me gustó...

50 jaar TU/e

This Thursday April 27th is the 50th anniversary of the TU/e (Lustrumdag), the university where I'm working. There will be a lot of parties and celebrations. The Queen Beatiz (Maxima's mother-in-law) is coming as well. Casually, this weekend is celebrated the Queen's day (Koningendag), and therefore, since this Thursday the city will be become in a whole party.

What can I do? Celebrate!! Of course...

Este jueves 27 de abril es el 50 aniversario de la TU/e (lustrumdag), la Universidad donde estoy trabajando. Habrá un montón de fiestas y celebraciones. La reina Beatriz (la suegra de Máxima) también viene. Casualmente, este fin de semana se celebra el día de la Reina (koningendag), y por lo tanto, desde el jueves la ciudad se convertirá en una sola fiesta.

¿Qué puedo hacer? ¡¡¡Celebrar!!! Por supuesto...

A camping day = Un día de camping

Yesterday, at lunch time was a nice moment, that remembered me my school time when we used to go to camping (for example at September 21st to Campo Quijano). The day was beautiful, it was 23 degrees and a clear sky. So, with the mates of the ninth floor of my faculty (with who I usually go to lunch) decided (actually they decided) to go to the grass to have the lunch.

For their comments, it’s usually done for everybody when we have nice days. And indeed it was the occasion: almost everybody in the university was having lunch under the trees’ shades or sunshine. In Salta I didn’t use to do so, but I know that some people do so, but I think it’s not as massive as is here. Today was really awful, rainy and cold… and so you could deduct why people react in this way when there are good weather conditions…

Ayer, la hora del almuerzo estuvo buena, me hizo recordar mis días de la escuela en los que solíamos ir de camping (por ejemplo a Campo Quijano el 21 de setiembre). El día estuvo buenísimo, con 23 grados y un cielo despejado. Así que con mis compañeros del noveno piso de mi facultad (con quienes usualmente voy a almorzar) decidimos (en realidad ellos decidieron) ir al pasto a almorzar.

Por sus comentarios, esto es hecho usualmente cuando tenemos buenos días. Y de hecho esta fue la ocasión: casi todo el mundo en la universidad estaba almorzando bajo la sombra de los árboles o el mismo sol. En Salta no solía hacerlo, pero sé que mucha gente lo hace, pero creo que no es tan masivo como lo es aquí. Hoy estuvo horrible, lluvioso y frío… y por eso pueden deducir por qué la gente reacciona de esta manera cuando hay buenas condiciones climáticas…

The world is a hand scarf... = El mundo es un pañuelo...

Yes, the World is a hand scarf. I don't know where to start. Well, let me see... when I was in Salta, I worked for a supermarket, there one of my co-workers was Carolina, an accountant. She left the work (as me) and one week before coming to the Netherlands I met her in the city, and when I commented her about I was coming here, she told me that one brother of her was here in Rotterdam, working for a fruit importer company. And nothing else, she didn't give me email addresses to contact him, nothing.

In the other hand, yesterday Gustavo and I went to Rotterdam to a birthday party (of an Argentinean of course). One of the guests was Martín, a guy from Salta. The immediate questions that arise in these situations is try to know where in Salta he is from, work, etc, and what he is doing here. He told me "I'm working here, in a fruit importer company, etc", I just stayed thinking... and then I told him, "Aha, your sister is an accountant and worked for Damesco supermarkets". He told, "yes, but how do you know that"... and well, the surprises of the case came later...

So, the conclusion is that doesn't matter in which part of the world you are, all the situations lead you to find people that indirectly you know in some sense. This life is fancy, isn't it?

It should be sum up to the another coincidence I told you some week ago, about a guy from Salta whose parents were the owners of the field in front to my house (El Altillo)...

The party was really funny, with people from Ecuador, Perú, and of course from Argentina, the host is from Santiago del Estero, three from Salta, and Miriam from Capital. It was a really Argentinean party, in all senses, believe me...

Sí, el mundo es un pañuelo. No sé por donde empezar. Bueno, déjenme ver... cuando estaba en Salta trabajé para un supermercado, allí una de mis compañeras de trabajo era Carolina, una contadora. Ella dejó el trabajo (como yo) y una semana antes de venirme a Holanda, me la encontré en la ciudad, y cuando le comenté sobre mi venida a aquí, me dijo que un hermano de ella estaba aquí en Rótterdam, trabajando para una compañía importadora de frutas. Y nada más, no me dio ni direcciones de mail ni nada para contactarlo...

Por otra parte, ayer fuimos con Gustavo a Rótterdam a una fiesta de cumpleaños. Uno de los invitados era Martín, de Salta. Las preguntas que surgen siempre en estas situaciones es tratar de saber dónde de qué parte en Salta viene, trabajo, etc, y qué es lo que está haciendo aquí. Me dijo que trabaja en una compañía importadora de frutas, etc", sólo me quedé pensando... y luego le dije "Aja, tu hermana es una contadora y trabajó para Damesco". Él dijo, "Sí, pero cómo sabés eso"... y bueno, las sorpresas del caso vinieron luego...

Así que la conclusión es que no importa en qué parte del mundo estás, todas las situaciones te llevan a encontrar gente que indirectamente conocés. Esta vida es una casualidad, ¿no?

Esta coincidencia debe sumarse a la que les conté hace unas semanas sobre el muchacho de Salta, cuyos padres fueron los dueños de la finca frente a mi casa (El Altillo)...

La fiesta estuvo divertida, con gente de Ecuador, Perú, y de Argentina por supuesto, al anfitrión de Santiago del Estero, tres de Salta y Miriam de Capital. Fue una verdadera fiesta argentina en todos los sentidos, créanme...

A city tour... = Una vuelta por la ciudad

Today I was invited for the municipality of Eindhoven to a city tour. We traveled by bus along the more attractive places, monuments, neighborhoods, of the city. I also learnt a lot of new and curious things. We had a stop in a hotel near the airport and enjoyed a delicious cup of coffee with some slices of cakes.

I met a Spanish couple who took the places next to me. We were in the tour for almost 3 hours! So, now I know almost very well this city.

We were to a neighborhood in the north side of the city, which is divided into different parts. Each one represents one classical neighborhood of France, United States and Italy for example.

Good idea of the gemeente, they show the city to the new neighbors!

Hoy fui invitado por la municipalidad de Eindhoven a una vuelta turística en la ciudad. Visitamos los lugares, monumentos y barrios más atractivos de la ciudad. También aprendí un montón de cosas nuevas y curiosas. Tuvimos una parada en un hotel cerca del aeropuerto y disfrutamos de un delicioso café con algunas porciones de tortas.

Conocí una pareja de españoles que se sentaron en los asientos al lado mío. Estuvimos en el tour por cerca de 3 horas... así que ahora conozco esta ciudad muy bien.

Fuimos a un barrio en el norte de la ciudad que está dividido en diferentes partes. Cada una representa un clásico vecindario de Francia, Estados Unidos e Italia por ejemplo...

Muy buena idea del gemeente, muestran la ciudad a los nuevos vecinos.

Algo que me pareció divertido...

Hola gente, espero que anden bien. Resulta que todos los días trato de leer El Tribuno (el "diario" de Salta) y cada tanto me encuento con noticias cuyos relatos son graciosos y lamentables (si es que decimos que un "periodista" escribió la crónica).

Es sobre supuestos fantasmas en la nueva ciudad judicial (que no tengo la suerte de conocerla aún). Lean la crónica y diganme si no les parece mortal lo de "... rubia espectacular..." o lo de "No pasa nada ñaño"... Como me cagué de risa solo de leerlo. En fin, la noticia puede ser para prestarse a hacer bromas o cargar a los protagonistas de las mismas, pero no para tanto...

No sé qué piensan ustedes....

Off topic: La primavera por fín se hace sentir por estos lados. 19 grados y un sol radiante los principales protagonistas, y un ambiente de fiesta en Eindhoven porque la universidad cumple 50 años y viene la reina Beatriz para celebrar esto y su día (el de la reina) el próximo fin de semana.... ya les voy a estar contando más detalles luego... ahora a seguir "laburando"...

Funny situation = Situación graciosa

Something funny happen me today. Around a quarter to two, one of my room mates noticed me that there was going to be a conference here in the university about coding theory. As I was discussing some other stuff by chat with one of my colleagues, I asked him if I should go there or not. He replied me that “of course!”. So, I prepared my notepad and my pencil and ran away to the place where that conference took place. Of course I was a couple of minutes late, the talk had just started. I entered to the class room, and interrupted the talker. He said me that he should switch to English because of me. I didn’t understand it immediately up to when my room mate said that I also could be Spanish.

Then, I looked to the room and all the attendees were Dutch spoken people. Indeed the person who was giving the talk switch to English and the talk continued. Meanwhile I realized that this talk was not so interesting for me, but I had to pay attention because the lecturer was speaking English only for my presence. I though, as my colleague told me in the chat, that my advisor was there, but he never appeared.

Anyway, I just listened to a nice talk titled “On linear codes whose weights and length have a common divisor”, for which I’m not really prepared...

Algo gracioso me sucedió hoy. Cerca de las 1.45, uno de mis compañeros de oficina me anotició que iba a haber una conferencia aquí en la universidad acerca de teoría de códigos. Como justo estaba debatiendo algunas otras cosas por Chat con uno de mis colegas, le pregunté si debía ir o no. Me contestó que por supuesto. Así que, preparé mi bloc de notas y mi lápiz y corrí al lugar donde la conferencia era. Por supuesto llegué unos minutos tarde, la charla había empezado recién. Entré al aula, e interrumpí al conferencista. El me dijo que debía empezar a hablar inglés porque estaba yo. No entendía nada de inmediato, hasta que mi compañero de oficia dijo que también podría ser en español.

Luego, levanté la miraba para el aula y todos los asistentes eran personas de habla holandesa. De hecho, la persona que estaba dando la charla comenzó a darla en inglés y la charla continuó. Mientras tanto me di cuenta que la charla no era tan interesante para mí, pero debía prestar atención porque el conferencista estaba hablando inglés sólo por mi presencia. Pensé, como mi colega me había dicho en el Chat, que mi supervisor estaba allí, pero nunca apareció.

De todos modos, escuché una linda charla titulada “On linear codes whose weights and length have a common divisor”, para la cual no estoy realmente preparado…
